🏔️ La RumorosaThe pass, El Vallecito and the overlooks of the sierra

Where the wind "murmurs" among the rocks, the road winds down toward the Mexicali valley. Ancient rock paintings, dizzying overlooks, a wind farm and a mountain village: the most spectacular day trip near the city.

What is La Rumorosa?

La Rumorosa is, all at once, a town, a road and an entire region of the Sierra de Juárez, in the municipality of Tecate. For anyone leaving Mexicali, it is the first big climb into the mountains: barely an hour from the city, the desert turns into granite canyons and cool air.

Its name is born of the wind: it blows tirelessly among the rocks and gorges of the sierra, producing a constant murmur—a "rumor"—that gives the whole place its name. That same wind is now the raw material for the wind farm that crowns the range.

The La Rumorosa pass—the stretch of Federal Highway 2D between Tecate and Mexicali—is famous across Mexico for its curves, grades and views: from the top you can see the sierra plunge toward the plain of the Mexicali valley. But the area is much more than the road: this is where the El Vallecito rock paintings, around 3,000 years old, and the famous Diablito that lights up at the winter solstice are found.

Frequently asked questions

How far is La Rumorosa from Mexicali?
La Rumorosa is about 73 km (45 mi) from Mexicali, roughly a 1-hour drive on Federal Highway 2D toward Tecate. It is the first big climb of the Sierra de Juárez as you leave the city.
Is La Rumorosa part of Mexicali?
The town belongs to the municipality of Tecate, but it is Mexicali's natural gateway to the sierra and to Tecate: it sits an hour away on Federal Highway 2D and is one of the classic weekend trips for Mexicali residents.
Why is it called La Rumorosa?
The name comes from the wind that blows constantly among the rocks and canyons of the sierra, producing a steady murmur or "rumor".
Can you visit it in a day from Mexicali?
Yes. It's an ideal day trip: leave early, walk El Vallecito in the morning (it opens at 8:00), have lunch in town and return in the afternoon to see the pass in good light.
What is El Vallecito and how much is admission?
El Vallecito is an archaeological zone with roughly 3,000-year-old rock paintings, the only one open to the public in Baja California. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM; general admission is around $70 MXN and Sundays are free for Mexican citizens and residents. Confirm hours and fees with INAH before visiting.
What is the El Diablito solstice phenomenon?
El Diablito is the most famous painting at El Vallecito. Every December 21, during the winter solstice, a ray of sunlight enters the rock shelter at dawn and lights up the figure, an archaeoastronomical event calculated by the ancient inhabitants thousands of years ago.
When is the best time to go?
October to April, when the weather is cool. Summer is very hot during the day. A special moment is December 21 (solstice) at El Vallecito, though that day is crowded and it's best to arrive before dawn.
Is the La Rumorosa road dangerous?
It is known as one of Mexico's most demanding roads because of its curves and steep grades. It is safe when driven carefully: respect the speed limit, use engine braking on the descent so the brakes don't overheat, keep your distance and avoid crossing in fog or strong wind.
Do I need a truck or 4x4?
No. The road is paved and El Vallecito is reached by a short dirt stretch passable with a normal car driven carefully. For more remote spots in the sierra, a truck does help.
